Gunners boss Arsene Wenger declared on Thursday that the Spaniard had a "50-50" chance of playing, but it has now been revealed that a hamstring injury will rule him out.

Fabregas' absence represents a serious blow to Arsenal - who will also be without goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and defender Kieran Gibbs - as they are desperate to get their season back on track following an embarrassing 3-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in their last league clash.

Wenger said: "Fabregas is not fit to play in this one and nor is Almunia. We lost Gibbs as well on Tuesday night with a calf problem and he is out of the England squad as well. He is out for two to three weeks.''

Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Nicklas Bendtner (groin), Aaron Ramsey (leg), Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie (both ankle) are still out, but Abou Diaby returns to the squad after an ankle problem.

Lukasz Fabianski is set to get the nod to replace Almunia after some high profile mistakes during his career thus far, but the goalkeeping problem at the Emirates is not a subject that concerns the Chelsea camp.

''Everybody on a football field makes mistakes but when you are a goalkeeper it ends up in the net,'' said Chelsea assistant Ray Wilkins. ''If you gauge the amount they make compared to midfield player, it's minimal.
